5. Defense Mechanisms

Termites have evolved an amazing array of defense mechanisms to shield their colonies from several hazards.Particularly striking adaptations evolved by soldier termites include highly armored head capsules and several weapons including strong mandibles, chemical sprays, and even the capacity to block nest tunnels with their own heads. While some species have evolved specialized behaviors whereby workers quickly fix breach points while soldiers protect them, others have developed the capacity to generate poisonous or sticky compounds that can immobilize invaders. These protective strategies highlight how powerfully natural selection can react to predatory demands.
