5. The Desert's Color-Changing Landscape

The spectacular colour changes of the Namib Desert's terrain over the day produce an amazing natural light show for guests. Different minerals in the iron-rich sand reflect different wavelengths of light, which causes the desert to change from pale pink at sunrise to deep red at noon, and dazzling orange at sunset. The angle of sunlight and meteorological circumstances help to intensify this phenomena, resulting in an always shifting canvas that photographers and painters find appealing. The middle area of the desert exhibits most dramatic colour fluctuations since the highest concentration of iron oxide in the sand produces the most strong red tones.
