9. The Dynamic Salt Formation Process

The continuous development of salt crystals in Uyuni shows an active geological process still forming the terrain. The strong sun of the dry season induces fast evaporation, which forms fresh salt crystals on the surface. Temperature variations, wind patterns, and periodic flooding all affect the complex patterns and textures this process produces, which vary with the year. A living lab of geological processes, the constant cycle of dissolution and crystallization preserves the unique look of the salt flat and progressively adds fresh layers to its already remarkable depth.
